Chapter Ten
He couldn’t believe this. He wouldn’t believe this. What was he doing? Walking down the hall, out into the lobby
of the hospital to tell the media of the world that Katherine was gone. His Katherine. Gone. Forever. Tears he
had tried to stop, now pooled at his eyes. He let them run freely, wiped them away and then took a deep breath.
Quickly, his mind flashed back to what just happened.
Ten minutes. That’s how long it took. That’s how long it took for his life to change. He and Linda had been waiting
anxiously for news. Spencer knew it wasn’t good the moment the doctor came through the double doors. From that
point on Spencer was unreachable, he shut down to everyone.
The doctor had made a comment about the number of press people waiting for news in the hospital. Spencer knew that
as her agent, he would assume the duty of telling them all of the events of the last day and a half.
He opened the door and was momentarily blinded by the explosion of flashing bulbs from their cameras. Spencer
made his way to the podium and saw their hopeful, expectant faces.
As soon as he said what he had to he turned and left. He had used up all his strength in those few moments. He
walked back through the door he came, and cried. Cried for the loss of his best friend, his only true love. His
Katherine.
"Kat, why did you leave me?" he asked aloud.
The scene that awaited him once he returned to the waiting area was worse than he could have imagined. Linda was
sobbing quietly in a corner. Lisa had arrived along with Annie, the two seemed to be trying to support the other.
But what he heard next would be something he would never forget as long as he lived.
"Where is my wife? What the hell happened to my wife?"
It was Alistair. What was he doing here?
"What the hell are you doing here?" Spencer demanded of him.
"I’m here to see my wife. Someone called. Told me she was in labour." he explained.
"When was that?" he screamed at him.
Alistair paused for a moment, trying to recall. "Oh, I’m not sure. Sometime this morning."
"This morning! This morning!" Spencer bellowed "It’ s is now 10:30 at night. Where the hell were
you?"
"I was tied up. You know this business." Alistair said as if it were normal circumstances.
"You were tied up? You were working while Katherine was here, having your child?"
"Well, yes." he replied simply.
"Katherine is dead!" he shouted finally.
"What? My wife is not dead!" Alistair yelled back.
"Yes, she is." he said quietly, trying still to believe that it wasn’t true.
"She died giving birth. There were complications, they tried surgery but it didn’t work, they..." he
said, voice fading.
"Surgery? Who allowed that?" Alistair inquired.
"I did." came a quiet voice.
"And who are you?" Alistair demanded.
"Her mother." Linda replied. Before the two could talk any further they were interrupted.
"What do you mean ‘your wife’ ?" Spencer asked, the fact finally registering in his mind.
"Exactly that. Katherine and I are married. Were married." he corrected. |
