Chapter Nine
How long had it been? How many hours? Spencer couldn’t remember anymore.
"Sir?" a nurse intruded on his thoughts.
"Yes?"
"She’s asking for you. Would you like to come in?" she inquired.
Spencer walked past her and directly into Katherine’s room. He gasped slightly at her appearance. Pale, weak.
This wasn’t right. He could feel it.
"Spence." she said in a voice that was barely a whisper.
"Shhh, I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere." he promised.
"The baby, something’s wrong with the baby." she cried.
He gently stroked her soaking hair away from her face in an attempt to calm her. "Kat, the baby’s fine. The
doctor’s on his way. He’ll be here soon."
As if on cue, the dark haired man in surgical dress walked through the doors. "Do my ears deceive me?"
he said, halfway laughing "Well hello there, Miss Katherine."
Spencer walked up to the doctor to intercept him before he made his way to Kat.
"Excuse me, you are?" he inquired.
"Well, I’m the doctor. At least I think I am." the man said.
"Is that supposed to be funny?" Spencer said, anger rising within him. "I don’t know. Maybe. Let’s
see what we got here..." he said positioning himself at the foot of Katherine’s bed.
"Well, well. We need to get this lady up to surgery right away. This baby is coming out tonight!" the
doctor pronounced.
Spencer stopped him before he made it out the door. "I’m not so sure. I don’t think this is right. I want
another doctor. One who... who knows what he’s doing."
"I’m the doctor. I know what I’m doing. I’ve overseen this pregnancy since the beginning." he said.
"Spence..." came Katherine’s quiet voice. He turned to face her and saw her outstretched hand reaching
towards him. "It’s okay. Really. I trust him. I’ll go with him." Katherine told him.
"Are you sure, Kat? I mean he doesn’t seem right. He’s making jokes, acting weird." Spence questioned.
"Spence, it’s okay." she said.
They began to roll her away when she called out to him again. "Spence, promise me something."
Without hesitation he said, "Anything."
She laughed softly that he hadn’t heard her request and he already complied.
"Promise me that if anything happens to me that you’ll look after my baby."
"Of course. I’ll do anything." Spence promised.
"I love you Spence." she said through the crowd around her, as they rolled her down the hallway.
He paced back and forth in the small waiting room. It felt as though the walls were beginning to close in on him.
"Spencer?" an unfamiliar voice said.
"Yes." he confirmed.
"I’m Katherine’s mother, Linda Walker. You called." she explained.
"Mrs. Walker. Please to meet you." he said.
She glanced past him, over his shoulder, towards the door."How’s she doing?" concern evident in her voice.
"I don’t know, they wont tell me anything." he said raising his hands in the air out of frustration.
"Sir?" he heard.
"Yes?" Spencer said, turning around.
"I have some news." the man began.
Spencer felt Mrs. Walker grab his hand and squeeze it tightly.
"You’re not the doctor who went up with her. Where is he? Is something wrong? What happened to Katherine?"
he questioned. "He is still with Miss Walker. The baby is alive, a beautiful girl. However there are some
complications. Miss Walker isn’t recovering as quickly as we’d like her too. We need to operate. We do need consent
from a family member before we do so." he explained.
"I’m her mother." Linda said quietly.
"Good. I’ll have a nurse bring you the papers. Thank you, Mrs. Walker. Thank you." he said, leaving them
alone again.
Spencer watched as Linda shakily signed the consent and sat down in a nearby chair.
"You know, I came here with the expectation of seeing my daughter and my grandchild. I didn’t know that we’d
be kept from her and having to sign off on saving her life."
"I know. I can’t believe this is happening either." Spencer said sitting next to her, wrapping a comforting
arm around her. |
