Chapter Five
She pretended that she didn't see them. Just once she wanted lunch with Spence to go uninterrupted. He smiled at
her and said, "You know they're there, don't you?"
"Yeah, I do" she said flatly "Can't we have just one lunch without any autograph signings?"
"Can I help it if I'm popular agent? What's a guy to do?" he joked. "Spencer!" she laughed,
tossing her napkin in his direction.
"Kat you have to realize that you're a big star now. People are going to come up to you because they think
they know you. It's part of the life, baby." he explained.
She let out an extended sigh, her sign of submission. "You're right." she said, waiving the girls over.
"Girls?" she spoke to them.
"Oh, Miss Walker, we love you! We saw your last four movies. They were just great!" the first one said.
"You're my favorite star ever." her friend gushed.
"Thank you." Katherine said gratefully.
The two girls left then, allowing Spence and Kat to resume their lunch.
"Can you believe we've done this twice a week, every week for the last two years?" she asked in disbelief.
"Of course. I need all these 'meetings' so I can write them off as business expense.
You didn't think I liked your company, did you?" he laughed at her. "Cute. Very cute. Did I mention that
I'm in the market for a new agent?" she shot back.
"Come on, seriously Kat. You and me we're more than agent and talent right? We're friends. Good friends, I
hope." he asked.
"Absolutely. " she said, suddenly serious.
"You were the first person I called when daddy got sick. You came with me, back home. Visited him in the hospital.
I don't think I could have done it without you. I know Lisa would have come but she was out of town with Rick."
she told him.
Spencer chose not to mention the fact that Katherine hadn't even thought to bring Al to visit her family. He decided
it best not to bring that up.
"Where were you?" Al demanded as she walked in the door.
"At lunch with Spence. You know that every Tuesday and every Thursday we have lunch. It's been that way since
forever and it hasn't changed." she said quickly.
"Don't get smart with me young lady!" he yelled, quickly grabbing her arm.
" 'Young lady'? You're drunk. Get away from me!" she screamed and squirmed out of his grasp. He caught
up to her just before she escaped up the stairs.
"I know what you were doing." he said in a voice that was eerily quiet and calm.
"You and your 'agent'. You are together. You always have been - you and your LOVER!" he screamed in her
face.
"Stop it! It's only ever been you since the night I was here at your party. Spence is friend and that's it.
Nothing else. All though, right now I wonder why!" she shot back.
That was it. She'd gone a step too far and crossed the line. She didn't care though. He had no right accusing what
he had. But it was too late for that as she felt his palm connect with her cheek. Before she had a chance to process
what happened he was gone. Still attempting to process what happened a distant ringing was pulling at her thoughts.
"Miss Walker?" someone said.
No reply.
"Miss Walker?" they repeated
"Yes?" she asked hesitantly.
"Telephone for you." the maid said motioning her towards the phone in the living room.
"Hello?" she said quietly.
"Katy?"
"Mom?" she asked in surprise.
"Yes Katy. I have some news." came a quiet voice.
"He has to be here! He has to." she said in anguish.
"Hello?" came the familiar voice through the speaker.
"It's me. Can I come up?" she asked.
No reply was followed by the mechanical buzz unlocking the main door. She quickly ran up the stairs and found him
standing in the hall, with the door open to his apartment.
"My father's dead." was all she said. |
