Chapter Three
Katherine wondered how she ever lived anywhere but here. She loved L.A. and it her. She thought it nearly unbelievable
that it had been a year since her arrival. Life prior to this was a distant memory. One that faded with each day.
Sure, she hadn’t actually had any acting jobs yet, but that was to be expected. It would take time. After
staying in a fleabag motel for way too long she had saved enough with her new job to rent a small
apartment. She felt safe and it was within walking distance to Annie’s cafe as she now called it.
Not only had Katherine and Annie hit it off, but one day Annie’s daughter Lisa was visiting. Seeing as they were
close in age, the two simply became the best of friends.
One weekend the two friends had plans to attend a party. As she was putting the finished touches on her make up
the buzzer sounded off, announcing the arrival of her friend. After the traditional greetings, the two settled
in Annie’s car that they borrowed for the evening.
"Katherine - do you know who’s going to be at the party?" her friend asked wide-eyed.
"No. Who?" she inquired.
"Movie people!" Lisa squealed.
"Lisa!" Katherine hollered back "why didn’t you tell me? Why didn’t you say anything? I would have
worn something completely different."
"I know. That’s why I didn’t tell you. They should meet you, the real you!" her friend explained.
As they entered the driveway of their destination, Katherine finally found the courage to ask, "How did you
know about this party and how did we get invited?"
"It was one of those ‘friend of a friend’ things." Lisa said nonchalantly.
As they walked from the car, it was first then that she took note of her surroundings.
"Lisa, we’re in Beverly Hills!" she nearly shouted.
"I know. Isn’t it delicious?" her friend smiled wickedly.
They continued on and found that the party was taking place in a large, outdoor tent. Feeling as though she was
stepping into a dream, Katherine let out an extended sigh. Flowers on every table, lights strung around the perimeter
of the tent, it was magical.
"Wow." Katherine whispered quietly.
"Well, that’s just the reaction I was hoping for." came a new voice from behind her.
Katherine turned to meet the owner of the smooth deep voice.
"This is beautiful." she told him.
"Thank you. I’m glad you like it. I’m Alistair, but everybody calls me Al. This is my place." he informed
her.
"I’m Katherine and this is Annie. " she said motioning to her friend.
"Please to meet you both." he continued extending a hand.
"So how are you two in ‘the business’?" he inquired "It’s not often that we have two pretty young
ladies around that I don’t know of." he joked.
"Oh, we’re not -" Katherine said.
"- yet." Lisa finished for her.
"Yet?" asked a confused Al.
"Katherine here, " Lisa stated "is going to be an actress." |
