Chapter 14
"Hi to you too, Sis," he said, trying to stall. "You know, I could ask you the same question."
"I came to drop Sheridan's car off," Theresa answered without hesitation. "I was about to leave
a note on her door since she's at work. Which brings me back to my question. What are you doing inside Sheridan's
house when she's not home?" Her eyes danced with amusement and Luis could see the young, dreamy side of his
sister start to take form.
"Theresa, it's not what you're trying to make it out to be, alright? I came by to tell Sheridan something
and her door was unlocked. I came inside to see if she was home, and when I realized she wasn't I stuck around
to make sure burglars hadn't come in."
"Okay, Luis. I'm not accusing you of breaking and entering if that's what you think. I believe you. But that
still doesn't explain why you mumble Sheridan's name in your sleep."
Ivy sat quietly on the sofa, pretending to be engrossed in the latest issue of "Good Housekeeping". Anyone
could tell just by looking at the title that Ivy had no idea what she was reading. Which was true. She was feeling
too guilty to be interested in a tip from a Martha Stewart-wannabe. This guilt wouldn't give her a moment of peace.
Ever since the party last night, Ivy couldn't keep her mind from wandering to the conversation with Sheridan, and
the pain she saw in her eyes when they were talking about true love.
"Oh, Sheridan, I'm so sorry. I had no idea what I was getting myself into with that deal." One thing
was for sure: it was easier not to think twice about ruining someone's life when they weren't in town. As for Luis,
she couldn't bear to face him for weeks. Then she heard about his engagement with Beth, and figured it all worked
out in the end. He had found happiness anyway, and she was able to live with what she had done with a lot more
ease. Even so, she couldn't help wondering about what might have been between Luis and Sheridan if she hadn't interfered.
"Oh damn you, Alistair," Ivy mumbled under her breath.
"Has Martha Stewart let anyone in on the secret of how to make a house out of toothpicks yet?" Ivy looked
up, startled out of her thoughts. Ethan grinned and motioned to her choice of magazines. "Really, mother.
I never realized you were a fan of hers."
"Well now you do. It's never too late to change my Christmas present, you know," she played along. Ethan
laughed and hugged his mother.
"Seriously, though. What in that magazine has you so interested? Beth keeps raising her eyebrows every time
she looks over here."
"I wasn't really reading it, silly. I just have a lot on my mind. Which reminds me, how is Sheridan? Have
you talked to her yet?"
Her son shook his head. "Not today. I haven't seen her since Luis drove her home. Why?"
Ivy shrugged. "I was just wondering. You must be really happy she's back home. I know how close you two are."
"I'm very happy. But sometimes I think, well, she's not." "What do you mean?"
Ethan held a solemn expression, and his voice became low. "She hasn't said anything, but I can tell something's
eating away at her. Sometimes, when we're talking, she gets this faraway look in her eyes. Like she's thinking
of something else that keeps haunting her. I just wish I knew what it was. I can't stand to see her unhappy."
Ivy rested her palm against Ethan's cheek. "Don't worry, son. I'm sure she's just having a little trouble
adjusting. After all, she just got back yesterday."
Ethan nodded. "That's probably it." He looked at his watch. "I have to go see Theresa now and make
plans for tonight. I'll talk to you later?" Ivy nodded and watched her son go out the door of the Book Cafe.
"It's more like someone she's thinking of, Ethan. Someone like Luis." She sighed and closed her eyes.
Ethan wanted Sheridan to be happy. And they deserved to know the truth. So what was stopping her?
Luis's jaw dropped. Had Theresa just said what he thought she said? "I-uh … what?"
Theresa burst out laughing at her brother's expression. Poor Luis, he thought she was serious. "Luis,"
she managed to sputter out. "I was just kidding. You should have seen the look on your face, like I had just
uncovered your big secret." More laughter ensued. "Don't worry, I know you don't have any feelings for
Sheridan."
Luis was glad he had a stern look on his face. Otherwise, his little sister would see him blush. If only she knew
how close to the truth she was. "Come on, let's get out of here. I have to get to work."
"You go ahead, Luis. I still have to write Sheridan a note." She watched as her brother's profile disappeared.
"You're not going to be able to just run away that easily next time, Luis. I gotcha, and I'm not about to
let you off the hook." A plan began to formulate in Theresa's head as she scribbled Sheridan a short message.
Now, the fun would begin. |
