Chapter 12
"Goooood Morning!" the radio blared. Luis
jerked awake. He blinked a few times and found himself in bed in his room. Where was Sheridan? This definitely
wasn't her living room. Was it all just a dream? Or had Sheridan really come home? Luis shook his head and climbed
out of bed.
Sheridan stared out into the ocean as she sipped her coffee. A light breeze ruffled her hair and she brushed the
stray strands out of her eyes. A seagull flew high above her, calling out to its mate and the sun to rise with
him and start the day. The waters that were wild and tumultuous just a few hours before were rolling calmly against
the shore, beckoning to the creatures of the beach to come out. The seaweed strewn all over the sand gave the ocean's
vicious nature away, though, and no one answered its call. Suddenly Sheridan saw another pair of wings soar above
her. The seagull had found its mate, and now they were riding through the air side by side. She smiled and went
back inside, clutching her mug in one hand.
The clock on the table read 7:30 in its bright red digits. Sheridan sighed. She had to be at work in a half an
hour, and she wasn't even ready yet. She couldn't help it if she overslept. The dream was too wonderful and fleeting
to be interrupted by an annoying alarm clock. But that was all it was. Just a dream. Sheridan set her mug down
and went into the bathroom to take a shower.
"I hope you have a nice day, sir." Nick looked over to where Jessica Bennett was standing outside the
Bed and Breakfast door.
"Thank you, um, Jessica right?" She nodded.
"Hey Jess! Are you ready?" Reese asked as he bounded over to give his girlfriend a kiss.
"I hate to interrupt, but is there a phone I could use nearby?" Nick wondered if they even heard his
question. Jessica pointed next door with the hand that wasn't wrapped around Reese. "Thanks." He opened
the back door of the house and walked into the Bennett kitchen. Being careful not to interrupt the couple busy
staring at each other at the table, he picked up the phone and dialed the number scribbled on a bar napkin. "Come
on," he pleaded. "Pick up already." At that comment, the dark-haired man at the table swung his
head over to where Nick was standing. "I'll be out of your way in a second," he assured the man. After
getting no answer after the fifth ring, Nick hung up. "I guess she doesn't have an answering machine yet.
Sorry about the interruption."
The man shook his head and laughed. "No problem. Charity and I were about to leave anyway. Say, are you new
in town?"
"I must not be doing that good of a job of fitting in with the 'townsfolk'," Nick observed. "My
name's Nick." He extended his hand towards the stranger.
"Miguel." Miguel shook his hand. "Listen, I really have to go now, but I hope we can talk later."
"Sure. I'll be sticking around in Harmony for a while." He watched Miguel and Charity walk out the door
hand-in-hand before checking his watch. "Shit." It was already 7:45. Where the hell was she? Nick grabbed
his coat and ran out the door. If he didn't get there on time, his boss would have his head.
Sheridan wrapped the towel around herself. A nice, long hot shower was exactly what she had needed. She only hoped
it hadn't been too long. John was never happy when one of his employees was late. Sheridan quickly got dressed
and started to look for her car keys when she remembered that she had left her car at Ethan's. How was she going
to get it now? She was due at the office in ten minutes. "Ooh, nothing's going my way today," she moaned.
"I think I might be, if you're going to Castleton. Need a ride?"
Sheridan looked up and saw a young hazel-eyed man standing in her doorway. She breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank
god you're here, Nick. Yes, I do need a ride."
"Hop in. I hope the traffic police in this town aren't too strict. I wouldn't want to be getting a speeding
ticket my first day on the job."
Sheridan smiled as she thought of Luis. "Unfortunately, they are pretty strict. But don't you worry about
them. Step on it. We've got less than ten minutes." The cream-colored Lexus sped away.
Luis stared down at his coffee groggily. "Mija, are you feeling okay?" his mother asked with concern
in her voice. Luis looked up.
"Yeah, Mama, I'm fine. Just tired."
"You did come home pretty late last night. How was Sheridan?"
"I came as soon as the weather cleared up. And she was fine." He picked up the paper and checked the
clock over the door. "I have to go now. See you later." Luis kissed Pilar on the cheek and walked out.
There was too much on his mind right now; he really needed some air. Maybe a jog along the beach before he went
to work would help him clear his mind. He picked up speed and soon the only thing audible to him was the pounding
of his feet against the asphalt. |
