Chapter 8
Nick Webster suddenly found himself looking into a
pair of beautiful, startled brown eyes. "Oh, I-I'm so sorry, sir," the beautiful brunette stuttered as
he helped her up. Nick didn't answer. He was too busy staring at the breathtaking woman who had just fallen into
his arms. "Sir?" He shook his head to get out of his trance.
"It's ok," he answered. "You just lost your balance there for a second and I caught you. Are you
alright?"
She nodded. "Thanks to you, Mr. …?"
"Webster. Nick Webster. And you are …?"
"Beth Wallace. Thanks for saving me there, Mr. Webster. Well, I guess I better get going." She took one
last look into his mysterious hazel eyes and turned around. Nick wanted to say something to stop her, but no sound
came out of his open mouth. He was paralyzed at the beauty of the woman he had just run into on the street. By
the time Nick was able to talk again, Beth had already turned a corner and disappeared.
"Beth Wallace. I'll find you again, wherever you are." He then proceeded to touch the spot where Beth
had fallen into his arms and walked off, his problems forgotten.
Beth turned the key in its lock and opened the door to her apartment. A red light flashed on her answering machine,
indicating that someone had left a message. She played back the message before flopping on to the couch, exhausted.
"Hey honey, it's me," Luis's voice echoed through the apartment. "Listen, I know I said I wasn't
going to go to Mama's tonight, but I changed my mind. You understand, don't you? I'll talk to you after I get home.
I love you. Bye."
Beth sighed. She would be spending another evening home alone. She started to twirl her diamond engagement ring
around her finger. The ring Luis had given her the night he proposed. She could still hear his words play over
and over again in her head. "I've realized that you're the only woman for me, Beth. Will you marry me?"
She had been ecstatic, and flung herself into his arms.
"Yes, yes I will!" she had cried over and over again. There had been so much love between them that night.
But lately, Beth felt that they had been growing distant. Not that she doubted his love for her. No, she was positive
that he loved her. And she loved him. With all of her heart. The phone started ringing, jerking Beth out of her
thoughts. "Luis?" she answered breathlessly.
"Sorry, Beth. I'm not Loverboy," laughed the voice on the other side of the line. "But I am a friend
that needs a little favor."
"Oh, I'm sorry Kristeen," apologized Beth. "What's the favor?"
"Well, an emergency came up at home, and I need someone to look after the Book Cafe for the last shift. I
was wondering if-"
"Say no more, Kristeen," Beth interrupted. "I'll be there within ten minutes. And you don't have
to thank me. I just hope everything turns out okay at home." She hung up and grabbed her things, headed to
the Book Café
Nick shoved his hands into his pockets. Man, it was cold here. Not like his sunny home state. How could people
live in this weather anyway? He decided to warm up with a nice cup of hot chocolate. "Say, do you know a good
place I could get some hot chocolate around here?" he asked a man walking by.
"There's a place called the Book Café just down the street," answered the man. "Just keep
going straight. It's by the Youth Center. You can't miss it."
Nick thanked the man, then broke out into a run until he reached it. It seemed cozy, with a fire roaring in the
fireplace by the bookracks and sofas. There was a young couple sitting at one of the tables, laughing while eating
their food. Then he noticed a familiar brunette standing behind the counter, taking someone's order. Nick smiled
to himself. This day just kept getting better and better. He opened the door and sauntered in.
"So that's why you've come back to Harmony."
Sheridan nodded. "My boss thinks it would be a good idea to expand the business over to the East Coast, so
he sent me and one of my co-workers on a plane across the country. Not that I didn't want to come before,"
she added quickly. "I've missed you, and Ethan, and Pilar all so much."
Ivy smiled and hugged her former sister-in-law. "Whatever made you come back, I'm glad you did. Well, this
has been an interesting evening," she said, getting up. "If you'll excuse me for a minute …"
"Oh, sure," Sheridan said, also picking herself up off the couch. "It's been nice talking to you
again, Ivy. And I'm really glad things worked out for you."
"Thank you, Sheridan. And don't you worry, things will work out for you too," Ivy assured. Sheridan gave
her a weak smile, and her eyes wandered over to where Luis was sitting for what seemed like the millionth time.
Ivy shook her head sadly. 'Oh, Sheridan, if I could just tell you what really happened, you wouldn't be in so much
pain right now. But I made a deal with the devil, for Ethan's sake, and I can't say a word about it to anyone.
I hope you understand.' She then walked over to where Pilar was sitting, leaving Sheridan to feel miserable alone. |
