Chapter 7
Ivy Winthrop Bennett watched as the conversation between
Luis and Sheridan got more and more tense. Or maybe intense would be the right word to use. Those two always managed
to make the temperature in the room escalate, whether they were bickering or flirting. But today she could feel
the room getting colder by degrees. If she didn't interrupt soon, it wouldn't be long before there was an explosion.
"Oh Sheridan, could you come here for a second, please? I have to ask you something." Ivy watched as
Sheridan left Luis staring after her.
"What is it, Ivy? Do you need my help with something?"
"No, I just wanted to sit and talk with you for a little while if you don't mind. I mean, it's been so long
since I've seen you."
"Too long," Sheridan agreed. "I'll tell you what I've been up to, but only if you tell me what went
on with you while I was gone. I heard about you divorcing Julian, but I'm still in the dark as to how you ended
up marrying Chief Bennett."
"Sure," said Ivy. "Well, to make a long story short, Julian and Grace Bennett found out that Sam
and I had an affair in the past, before I had married Julian and before Sam had met Grace." She paused, making
sure Sheridan understood that the affair was not ongoing over the years. "Grace was hurt because Sam had kept
this from her, even if it was from the past, and she filed for divorce. And you know Julian, he was looking for
any reason he could find to divorce me so he could continue sleeping with the maids without getting caught."
Sheridan rolled her eyes at this comment and nodded.
"So Sam and I both ended up divorced. Grace had gone back to Boston to try to find any information she could
about her past. Kay Bennett, their eldest daughter, left Harmony to travel around the world with her uncle, Hank.
Noah is still at school, so Jessica and Charity were all Sam had left. We started going out on dates again and
a few months later, he proposed. And that is how I became Mrs. Bennett."
Sheridan let Ivy's story sink in. "Were you forced to marry Julian, Ivy?" She nodded. "I'm so sorry,
I never knew."
"You have nothing to be sorry about, Sheridan. What happened happened and it turned out for the best, right?
I am now happily married with the most loving man on Earth."
Sheridan smiled sadly. "I'm really happy for you, Ivy. I'm glad you were reunited with your first true love.
I only wish that some day I'll find my true love."
"Now, Sheridan, don't be sad. I have complete confidence that one day you will find someone that loves you
just as much as you love him," Ivy assured her.
"It's just that whenever I think I've found that person, something happens and it turns out that he was just
using me or leading me on." Sheridan's gaze averted to where Luis was sitting with Ethan. Ivy noticed she
was looking at Luis and said under her breath, "If only you knew the truth about that night, Sheridan. How
things would be different for you now."
"Did you say something, Ivy?"
"No, no," Ivy stuttered. "I was just thinking about how things must be so different for you now.
I mean, you've missed a lot. So what were you up to in California?"
"What are you talking about, Ethan?" Luis asked angrily. "I wasn't looking at Sheridan like anything.
And you know I would never be unfaithful to Beth." Ethan backed up, only too familiar with what Luis was capable
of when he was angry. "Hey, man, calm down," Ethan said, putting his hands up in front of him. "I'm
sorry. I was just kidding around. You know I would never accuse you of cheating on anybody. You know what, forget
I said anything." Luis nodded and backed down. "Look, there's Sam and Miguel. I wanted to talk to them
about last week's game. Come on."
"You go ahead, I'll be right there," Luis replied, taking another swig of his beer. Ethan walked off
and he was left to contemplate his current situation. Luis stole a glance at Sheridan talking and laughing with
Ivy. She returned his stare with an icy cold one. He felt a chill go up his spine. Luis thought about what Ethan
had said. Had he been looking at Sheridan with desire? "You have got to forget about her," he said to
himself. "You have Beth now." Beth, his fiancée, the woman he loved. The woman he would never
cheat on and who would never cheat on him. Little did he know that at that very moment, Beth Wallace was in the
arms of another man. |
