Chapter Ten
"Turn right at the next intersection," Sheridan told Luis.
"I thought we were going to my mother's."
"Please, Luis," she pleaded, "We need to turn right. We can see Pilar tomorrow. But this is more
important right now."
Luis looked at her for a second and nodded. He made the turn.
"Is there a McDonald's around here?"
"Yeah. About a mile away."
"Head towards there."
Luis wondered where she was going with this. She had a determined quality to her voice. He glanced over at her.
She was looking intently out the window, leaning forward as far as her seat belt would allow.
"Stop at the McDonald's"
He did what she asked.
"Hungry?" he asked jokingly as he pulled into a parking space.
Sheridan didn't smile. He didn't think she had even heard him. She had a deep frown settled over her face. She
stared at him for what seemed to be an eternity.
"What?" he asked, wondering if he did something wrong.
She shook her head. "I'm sorry. What are we doing here?"
"You tell me."
She didn't seem to remember that she led them there. Sheridan sat back in the seat. He waited for her to say something.
She didn't speak. She just stared out her window. Suddenly, she unbuckled her safety belt and opened the car door.
He followed.
When he was outside, he looked across the hood of the car at her. She had a slightly disorientated look on her
face. Sheridan shielded her eyes from the sun and scanned the area. He wondered what she was looking for.
A car pulled into the parking space next to Luis. A woman stepped out. Sheridan took one look at her.
"Excuse me ma'am," she called to the woman. "Can I ask you a question?"
"Sure."
Sheridan approached the woman. Luis noticed she was holding something in her hand. He tried to get a closer look.
She had 2 pictures. One was ofRachel McHugh and the other of Brian Watts.
"I was wondering if you've seen either of these people," she said and showed the woman the pictures.
The woman looked them over carefully.
"Yeah," she said. "This man is the new tenant in my apartment building. He just moved in with his
daughter this afternoon.
"Where is this apartment building," Luis asked.
"It's on Piedmont Avenue on the west side. The address is 235 and his apartment is 5A."
"Thank you so much, ma'am. You have no idea how important this is to us."
"Yes, thank you," Luis told her.
"Well, I'm glad to have helped."
Luis was impressed to say the least. He couldn't quite believe how she got this information. How did she know that
this woman could help?"
"Haven't you heard? I'm a psychic," she answered his unspoken question.
He was momentarily taken aback. Then he laughed. He figured that she must have read his mind. "Indeed you
are." |
