Chapter Twenty-nine
Sheridan lay in bed, the sounds of Jennifer's crying still echoing in her head. Why wouldn't it stop? She was
losing her mind, that was the only explanation. It seemed to be getting louder and she closed her eyes and covered
her ears, and willed herself to stop hearing it. "Sheridan..." She heard Luis' voice and looked up. He
was standing there, looking concerned. The crying had stopped and she looked at him, her lip trembling. "What's
wrong Angel?"
"Jennifer... I heard her crying Luis... not in my dream, but when I was awake. I'm going crazy...I know it..."
Luis smiled. "You aren't going crazy Angel. Mama..." he called into the hall.
Pilar came into the room, holding a bundle in her arms. Sheridan gasped, "Oh God, it can't be..." Pilar
put Jennifer into Sheridan's arms and left the three of them alone. Sheridan looked down at the baby. Tears streamed
down her face and she hugged the baby to her. "Oh... I never thought I'd see her again..." She whispered.
Suddenly a thought occurred to her. "Why?" She asked Luis, her voice suddenly sad. "Why would you
bring her to me, just to make me give her up again? Oh Luis, I can't go through it again."
Luis sat on the edge of the bed and smiled. "You don't have to give her up. She's ours Sheridan... ours to
keep." Sheridan's face was blank as she took the information in... then a smile broke and she laughed as fresh
tears poured from her eyes. "But how? When? Oh Luis..."
Luis laughed. He'd never felt as good as he did this minute. He'd just given the woman he loved what she wanted
most in the world. "Beth appointed me guardian. She's legally mine. And she'll be yours as soon as we get
the adoption finalized."
Sheridan couldn't speak, she was so happy. She looked down at the baby. The baby of her heart, if not her body
and then she looked up at the man she loved. The man who was her heart.
There was no possible way that there was a human being in the world happier than she was at this minute. A few
short weeks ago she'd been alone, thousands of miles away, with nothing, and now she had everything she'd ever
hoped . No matter what life threw at them now, or what her family threw at them, together they would triumph.
The darkness that was her old life was in the past, where she planned to leave it and the future ahead looked
bright. With Luis and Jennifer in her life, how could it be any less.
