Chapter 22
Kay had slept soundly until Ahnna had begun crying for her 3:00 feeding. After she had fed and rocked her daughter
back to sleep Kay had lay in bed for hours unable to sleep and thinking of the future. She didn’t know where she
stood with Luis, she knew he would take care of Ahnna, but what was between them she didn’t know and was scared
to hope for.
She remembered the night that she was sure they had conceived Ahnna, the night he had made so special for her,
the romantic dinner, the cabin. She would give anything for that to be the way it was now. She felt tears well
up and the familiar sorrow of losing him and she pushed it down inside. She decided to concentrate instead on telling
Luis’ family and then telling her father about her mother. She wondered if Grace had even had the guts to come
back to the house tonight.
Grace had slipped in just before Sam went to bed. He hadn’t come after her and Grace was relieved. She saw her
youngest daughters light go out as she passed the door and she hoped that Kay wasn’t staying with them. She crept
si-lently down the hall to the bedroom she shared with Sam and slid under the covers listening to the familiar
sound of Sam showering before bed. She was nervous that Kay had told them all about her, but she was sure she could
act well enough to manage a few days and cast a great deal of doubt about Kay around town.
Sam walked into the bedroom grinning. For the first time in a year his family was whole again, plus one new perfect
member. He worried briefly at what was going to happen between Kay and Luis but then he spotted Grace curled un-der
the covers. His brow furrowed and he thought briefly about talking with her about her reaction to Kay’s return.
He knew Grace had missed her terribly, in fact she hadn’t let him near her the entire year saying she was too distraught.
Sam was sure Grace was just too overcome and she would welcome her daughter with open arms in the morning. He climbed
in bed with her and pulled her against him wishing tonight the pain would leave and he could really be with his
wife again but understanding she might need more time.
Grace stiffened against him and ignored his advances until he finally gave up and fell asleep then she sighed with
re-lief. Obviously Kay hadn’t said anything yet. Grace was thrilled. Only one more day she thought, then I will
finally be free.
Charity shifted in her sleep and draped her leg over Miguel. Miguel, who had been lying awake for sometime, was
in-stantly aroused. He longed to pull her on top of him and make love to her.
Miguel cursed himself again for his idea two months ago, he had suggested they wait from then on so their honeymoon
was extra special.
Shit, he thought, I am dying here. He turned away from her and felt her soft body press against his back and he
groaned and pulled the covers over his head, chanting mentally one more week, one more week.
Miguel dreamed of her, he often did, he felt her touching him and he turned to her. She stood in her wedding gown,
like an angel. He nearly swallowed his tongue as the gown seemed to melt away. He didn’t think he could handle
it if he woke up now. He stepped to her and kissed her running his hands over her skin. She was so warm and soft
and silky. He moaned and Charity stepped back. She darted away from him playfully he ran after her, she would let
him catch her then moments later she would run from him again. Miguel was bursting when she ran from him the last
time and she ducked into a forest Miguel lost sight of her but ran after in the direction she had gone. He ran
catching glimpses of her white skin and hearing her laugh and he ran and ran but never seemed to get any closer.
He called for her, Char-ity! CHarity!
"CHARITY!" He bolted awake.
Charity shot up and looked at him worriedly, Miguel shook his head and mumble nightmare and pulled her against
his side again waiting for his heart to settle. This is going to be a very long week, he thought as she snuggled
closer. |
